They walk side by side, sharing a chemistry that only comes with a long period of togetherness. Surprisingly, their’s is a new found friendship. May be a month old. But,the camaraderie  is there for all to see. Every morning, she stands at the other end of a narrow bridge, eagerly awaiting his arrival. I really admire her patience and her perseverance, as her eyes search the exact spot from where he will make an appearance. And, the ecstasy that bounces off her entire being at having finally spotted him, must surely be the most beautiful sight to see!
They meet and greet each other with much love and warmth, and begin their walk. She being the younger and the energetic of the two, flits about excitedly. And, he, an old timer, takes his time,as he puts one leg after the other. The understanding she shows for his unhurried pace, speaks volumes about her loving and caring nature. In fact, her face is a picture of warmth and tenderness, which she showers on everyone she comes in contact with!
By now, some of you might have guessed I am talking about my Chikoo. He is the old timer, who has his young companion,  Chhoti, by his side, during his morning walks! She never really asked for it, but I began getting  breakfast for her every morning, since quite some time now. My heart went out to the poor soul, wondering where she would find a bite to eat!  But, food is not the only thing that she looks forward to, when she meets us.There are days, when she meets us in the evenings, too, when my hands are empty. However, that does not change her feelings for me one bit.  The sheer delight that overflows from those lovely brown eyes on seeing us,  pulls at my heartstrings.
Knowing that someone is so overjoyed on meeting us, so glad to walk a few steps in our company, is an indescribable feeling. One needs to experience it to believe it. I consider myself blessed  for having experienced such unconditional love from these wonderful creatures. Getting a pet dog was never something that I ever planned in my life. It just happened. Or, maybe, it was destined to happen. I was destined to experience this love, this warmth, which has completely changed my life.
We brought home Chikoo, and he brought us closer to love, in all its varied forms. How lucky we really are, aren’t we?

  1. Hi Shilpa, this is my first time here. This piece is very well written, and even though I do not have a pet, your love for Chikoo comes across in this post. I also browsed through some of your other posts, and I really like your style of writing. 🙂
