Chuckling at the memories, he squeezed her hand lightly. Stroking it lovingly, he opened her palm and placed a kiss as light as a feather. Then, all of a sudden, he felt a lump form in his throat, an uneasiness in his heart. Blinking away the tears that threatened to spill over, he cleared his throat and fixed his gaze upon her face. In a moment the tears returned with such a force, he burst out sobbing.
“Why did you have to do this, Payal? Why? Hadn’t I told you to wait for a few minutes? What was the hurry, damn it?! You could have waited for the damn signal to change! Don’t you know you are supposed to watch the thing before crossing the road? Don’t you know such a simple thing? What am I going to do without you now? It’s been 20 years, Payal, 20 years since we have been together! How the hell am I going to manage without you? WAKE UP, PAYAL! Wake up, for God’s sake! Just wake up and come home! It’s been three weeks now, baby! How long do you want to keep lying here? Come on, now!” Getting off his chair in a quick movement, he held her by her shoulders and desperately shook her lifeless form, urging her to move. But, he knew it was all in vain.
It was just a matter of time before she would be taken off the ventilator. Just a matter of time before she would be gone. Gone forever. He laid her back on the bed and slumped beside her sobbing uncontrollably, mourning for his loss.
A single moment had changed everything, ended everything. All that was left were shattered dreams, a broken heart and a happy life snuffed out mercilessly.
*This is something that came to my mind as I read an article on road accidents today. It’s a pity that in a single moment of haste, a life gets snuffed out, leaving behind a home full of broken hearts and shattered dreams. We could be more careful, but, there’s also something called ‘destiny’, which brings death to your doorstep at a moment you least expected.
Such is life. And, it sucks!
