Self-care is the best care!

Just one question.

I have been writing a lot about the need for self-care for some time now. It’s an important part of loving ourselves, as we all know. So, today, I wish to ask you, dear reader, just one question revolving around ‘Self-care’. A question that will help us all know (if we answer it truthfully) if we truly prioritize ourselves, which in turn will tell us if we have, indeed, made self-care a part of our everyday schedules.

I would appreciate it if you share your replies with me because of the bond I have developed with you all over the years. Also, it will help me reflect upon my own ways of self-care and show me where I need to make changes and where I fair well.

So, here goes…

What is that one thing you do just for YOURSELF, each day, every day, without fail? Something you never feel guilty spending time for?

And, what do you do, or how do you feel, on days when you somehow miss doing it?

The second part of my question should reveal how we treat ourselves, especially when we fail to make time for ourselves, so please be honest–with yourself–when you answer this question.

So, beginning with me–well, shouldn’t I be the first one to answer the question and see how true I am being to myself? 😛

In answer to the first part:

The one thing I do just for myself each day, every day, is going for my evening walk, come rain or sunshine, even on days when hubby is home in the evenings and suggests watching a movie together. For me, my walk (by myself) is my me-time, and I shall not miss it for anything in the world. Okay, sometimes, I do miss it, because, that’s life!

And, since the past week now, since hubby gifted me the perfect set of earphones (Ah, how they fit me PERFECTLY!) I play my favorite music when I walk or listen to TED talks. The 45 minutes that I am outdoors are the best 45 minutes of my day!

And, to answer the second part of my query:

On days, when I miss my walk (and those days are few and far between), I feel like I missed out on something supremely important and make sure I walk around at home after dinner. It isn’t the same thing, but it means a lot to me that I walk, move around, for the sake of my body and mind.

No, I do not reprimand myself if I (sometimes) prefer talking with a dear friend over the phone instead of going for my walk, because for me my friends are very precious, so I just tell myself, “Chill, Shilps. It’s perfectly okay if you missed out on your walk. At least you enjoyed an hour of adult human interaction!”  I do need that human conversation after chatting with my parrots all day! 😛

So, that’s all! Easy, isn’t it?

  1. Read or write. I never think twice about doing either. I can only do this when I’m alone and that is something I take total advantage of 🙂

  2. Mine is relatively small, even in terms of time consumed… I write down one positive thing i enjoyed every day in a diary. In a stressful environment like the operation theater and ICU, it is my way of holding on to happiness.

  3. Good to know about your habit and am damn sure, that you have good fitness, good digestion power,normal sugar lever and a clear view towards life.
    Once physical exercise used to be such an activity in my life, reading books also was such a habit but what i never left is spending time with myself for which i have been called “unsocial” many times.

    1. Yesss! I do have a good digestion, normal sugar and a clear view towards life. On the fitness front, though, there are times when I fail to impress myself.
      I can understand why you are called “unsocial”. That’s what I get called too by those who don’t know me. But, as long as we enjoy the activities we indulge in, it doesn’t matter what the world thinks about us, isn’t it?

  4. Self care for me is possibly going for a walk. I’ve been so used to walking when I get up that I find myself a different person when I don’t walk .
    And on days I don’t walk, I just go around like a beat with a sore head and eat chocolate to feel better about myself .
    This in itself is counterproductive as I feel terrible about it .
    And I agree with you about self care. We tend to forget ourselves while thinking about the rest of the world

    1. Walking or not walking has the exact same effect on me, Sunita. 🙂 Although, I don’t feel bad if I munch on a chocolate or some junk. I just tell myself that it’s okay to sin, once in a while! 🙂

    1. It’s something I realised only recently, and how the absence of it disturbed me when I wouldn’t practice it. Self care is now a big part of my to-do list and everyday routine.

  5. I don’t have one activity. I think for me it is spending some time to do what I like the most … It could be reading, working out, drawing or watching a kdrama.
    I love that your activity is not just great for physical health but mental health too. It’s inspiring to know that you are so dedicated towards it.

  6. I tell myself everyday I should walk more. But my ritual is a quick 10 minute yoga stretch in the morning. I really don’t beat myself up if I miss a day but on the days that I do stretch I feel much better.
