My Word of the Year for 2020 – WELLNESS.

WHO defines WELLNESS as a state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.

It’s an active process of becoming aware of and making choices towards a healthy and fulfilling life.

This year, my chosen Word of the Year is WELLNESS.

And, because I believe that we need not wait until a particular day or moment to make a change in ourselves or our life, I started working on my WOTY way before the New Year.

Any day is a good day to make the change that will make you a healthier, happier you.

A couple of months ago, when I was on a break from blogging, I had ample time to reflect upon things.

My health and diet, for example, needed to be worked upon as I wasn’t meeting my own expectations of a good, healthy me.  My reading and writing habits needed a revamp, too.

Because I don’t put on weight fast, I took lightly things like having unhealthy snacks before going for my walk, drinking (very sweet) coffee twice a day, and missing out on my Yoga.

My Yoga sessions, which had been regular for the past few years, had fallen off the track as I had been waking up too late to get into exercise mode. I reasoned that because I went for my evening walks every day, I didn’t need to panic for missing out on Yoga! But I could feel my flexibility going downhill, my body feeling lethargic and my mind not being as alert as I wanted it to be.

Ergo, these changes that I made in my lifestyle and diet and which I intend to follow for the coming years:

I GAVE UP COFFEE FOR GOOD

Last year, I gave up coffee only to get back to it with a vengeance! A month ago, I realized how I had grown dependent upon my morning and afternoon mug of chilled, sweet and strong coffee that cheered me up albeit for a short while.

So, last month, after my stock of coffee was over, I did not replenish it. I just set the excess milk into curd and looked up quick and easy smoothie recipes.

Suffice to say, I am GLAD I made this change. My digestive system seems happier!

RAGI MALT FOR LATE-AFTERNOON SNACKS

No more banana chips or bhel (both of which I love) for my snack-time. It’s the homemade, savory RAGI MALT before I leave for my evening walk.

This is loaded with calcium, iron and B vitamins (all of which I need).

It also leads to a lighter dinner as it is filling and keeps me from piling food onto my dinner plate like I used to.

EARLY DINNER

Dinner time is now 8:45 pm, as opposed to 9:30 (or even 10 pm!) like earlier.

This gives me time to digest my food and sleep without that heavy, bloated feeling we get when we eat too much, too late.

EARLY MORNING YOGA SESSIONS

I wake up earlier now than I used to, either by 5:45 or 6. I have my spoonful of flaxseed powder and two mugs of warm water and after a while, I sit down to do my yoga asanas.

I enjoy doing my yoga when the rest of the world is fast asleep, especially my birdies. That quiet hour, when even the sun hasn’t risen, is the best time for my Yoga practice.

TRIPHALA TEA BEFORE BEDTIME

GLOW, by Vasudha Rai, (a book for which I must thank my friend, Shalini Baisiwala),  taught me a lot.

I read about Triphala churna, an Ayurvedic herbal formula that helps not only in improving digestion, but also the skin, hair, and overall health. It also helps you sleep well. And, boy do I need my 7 hours of uninterrupted sleep every night!

My sleep pattern had been erratic for the past few months now. I would sleep By 10:30 or 11 pm only to wake up by 2:30 or 3 am. Then, it would be 2 hours of tossing and turning and counting countless sheep before I would fall asleep again only to wake up dull and groggy at 7!

Sleep is one of the most essential, and often undervalued, aspect of our health. If you don’t get a sound sleep at night, how are you going to face the day, stay healthy, peaceful and productive?

The Triphala Churna is definitely helping me with my sleep and I feel better when I wake these days.

My reading and writing habits needed improvement and I guess the Universe heard my prayer. I am getting books to read right, left and center and I am writing a lot more these days.

Reading and writing, due to their therapeutic nature, help one stay mentally healthy, alert and peaceful. These activities help divert the mind from stressful thoughts, take you away from a stressful situation, and help you express your feelings better.

Mental health is the most important aspect of our health and it needed my attention and I am glad I realised what it was that helped me feel at peace.

It pays to work on our overall health by making changes that we really need.

I know I will be able to fulfill these goals because they are doable goals, that I understand, are necessary for my health. And, because there isn’t anything more precious than my health, I intend to give it my all.

It’s only when we reap the benefits of a particular habit do we understand how important it is to make that habit stick. It is then that we make it a part of our everyday life.

I know that nothing about life is in my control, so what I can do is do as much as is in my control!

So, WELLNESS it is for me, this year.

Make sure you break down those goals into mini-goals that you can follow on an everyday basis.

But also make sure you don’t give yourself a hard time if you are not able to follow the routine once in a while. Life often gets in the way, you see? You just gotta go with the flow!

Also, we need to maintain balance. It’s what’s most necessary for a healthy, happy and peaceful life.

So, do cut yourself some slack once in a while. Your mind and your body need this leisure, the leniency, and the pampering. It will keep you emotionally healthy. And, after mental health, it is our emotional health and wellbeing that’s an important part of our health and wellness.

  1. as always very thoughtful post. last six months i had to take a break from work due to personal reasons. it gave me a chance of self reflection, many are common in your post. I know about Triphala churna, how do you make tea? i also want to stop the first cup of tea, instead switch to a detox drink in the mornings.
    i also wanted to understand – the image that you also put towards the end. is this insert image option? i want to learn to do that. Happy New Year and continue sharing your insightful posts with us

      Triphala tea is nothing but heating a cup of water and adding to it a teaspoon of triphala churna. Allow it to sit for 5 to 10 minutes before drinking it. It’s helping me sleep so well, I wonder why I didn’t do it all these days!

      The image at the end is the Pinterest Image that I created on the Canva app on my phone. Do you have it? Install it on your phone or use it in your computer. It’s super easy to create images for any social media platforms. I download it from Canva onto my computer and upload it on WordPress from where it is easy to add at the end of the post in the drafts.

      There’s a ‘Featured Image’ button also which helps you insert a featured image for the post which appears at the top of the post. That too I create on Canva.

  4. Another excellent word! I share some of your goals. Others, I’m self-aware enough to nod, acknowledge your wisdom and willpower, and move along. Give up coffee? Never!! LOL – maybe not never, but it’s not even an aspirational thought at the moment. Read and write more? Check! Right there with you. Earlier dinners? You make me feel good, with this one! Conventional wisdom in the US is to finish eating and close up the kitchen for the night by 8 PM, and not to eat within an hour or two of bedtime. To eat all meals within an 8-10 hour window during the day, if possible, with NO snacking between meals. (See https://www.health.harvard.edu/blog/intermittent-fasting-surprising-update-2018062914156 ) Aspirational goal, there, maybe. We’re also social creatures. Meals are social activities. I watched a video today that gave more credible advice than the usual “3 THINGS YOU ABSOLUTELY MUST AVOID” (I’m not buying what they’re selling – supplements – but there was some seemingly sound, definitely harmless nutrition advice in there, and I’m going to give it a try over the next month or so.) I definitely need more exercise, and to drop some pounds. To not talk about it, just do it. At least I’ve never been on that diet rollercoaster, with all its ups and downs.

      8 sounds like a good time to finish with dinner. You know, ever since I wrote this post, I have consciously been having my last meal by sunset. I read recently that that’s when you must have your last meal, so it does feel good. I eat and then go for a walk, return and have a banana and that’s it; I don’t feel like having the usual dinner I used to have some days back.
      I gave up coffee coz it was giving me a tough time. The milk in the coffee was 😛 giving me gas. Ouch! That was the reason I gave up coffee. And, I don’t even miss it anymore.
      WIsh both of us a good, healthy 2020, Holly. We do need to stay on the right track…the wellness track! 😀

  6. Happy happy new year Shilpa. And I’m glad to see you so sorted. I must try that Triphala churna for H. He always has trouble sleeping through the night. Mercifully, I’ve rarely had this issue.
    I do not have a WOTY. In fact I’ve been struggling with fixing any goals at all for me. Perhaps I’ll get there at some point. Need more introspection.

    1. You can take all the time you need to sort things out for yourself, Tulika. There’s no need to think about a word, really. And I am sure you will know what it is that needs your attention!

      Triphala takes some time getting used to. H might not find the taste appealing. So, I would suggest take baby steps. Try warm milk before bed time instead of Triphala.

  7. An excellent word for the year. I am actually not surprised by your choice, given the fact that you try to go natural as much as you can. As for coffee, motherhood made me start drinking it. I was only a green tea drinker. Now I need some caffeine to sustain. So inspiring to read about all the changes you are making in your life.
    You know what, one of my doctors almost fell off her chair when I told her I had my dinner at 8 or 9 pm. This was during pregnancy. She was like – it’s too late, not healthy at all. Instead, she told me to eat at 7 pm and sleep early.
    Triphala tea sounds great. I will try to find that here.

    1. I know, Raj. Eating early used to be a habit way back, but then I became lazy. SO, now I am trying to change all of that. It’s the little things we do that can shape our life the way it’s supposed to be lived…is what I feel. So, this WOTY for 2020 is my little attempt at living a better, healthier life. Let’s see how it goes!

  8. You’re acing it girl, and how! Love that steely resolve to put the focus back on ‘wellness’! We all need to do something about it considering how we live from days to weeks to years without ever really weighing how unhealthy we’re all becoming these days! I used to have Triphala Churna as a kid and I have to be honest here—I used to hate it. But, after reading this, I might be surprised to find it sitting on my kitchen shelf beckoning to me, someday! (Well, Who knows?) 🙂

  9. I’ve always struggled with my weight, Shilpa and now reading your post makes me realize how easy it would be for naturally slim people to ignore their health!   10. I enjoyed reading this pist so much. Last year I gave up chocolate for 116 days until Xmas Eve. I’ve had chocolate since then but giving up again starting Monday until Easter. But I don’t think I could give up coffee! I’m going to check out the herb you mentioned for sleeping as I don’t sleep very well at all. Thanks for all the Great health tips in this post.       Giving up chocolate can be tough for me the same way giving up coffee feels difficult for you! I love chocolates, and even though I eat it rarely, it’s something I can’t imagine giving up.

  11. Happy to know the changes you made are working for you. I don’t have a WOTY. Infact, I never have. I feel too much pressure when I set goals. So I keep it simple – revolve around themes and I track them. That makes it easy for me.

    1. Parul, that’s good, too. Having goals or plans can feel like a burden at times as life is not in our control and you never know what might get you off track.
      I am taking it slow and easy as far as my plans for 2020 go. I am okay missing out on some of these once in a while, coz every day can’t be our day!

  12. Shilpa it’s hard to believe that you had any bad habits. You seem such a disciplined and calm person. But you are right about how easy it is to fall off the wagon. I too had given up coffee and tea but went back to it after several years…. I also quickly gave up my regular morning walk and yoga practice…. I am now regretting it all the more since after my arm injury I had to stop all exercise for at least 2 months. It is now showing in my love handles, bingo wings and breathlessness when I climb stairs… I have chosen detach/distance for my WOTY but could well do with incorporating your word WELLNESS in my own life.     1. Sunita, I have tons of bad habits, and eliminating them from my everyday life feels so difficult sometimes that I go back to those habits. 😛
      This year, though, I am trying to stay on track and hope life cooperates, too.
      I like the word you have chosen: DETACH. It’s what we all need to practice. Knowing that nothing and nobody will be with us all our life, knowing that holding on only leads to heartache, it’s wise to stay detached. But we humans aren’t wired that way, I feel. Not all of us find it possible to stay detached. Some sentimental fools like yours truly get too attached to people and then suffer from too much of heartache later, when those people have moved on. Things–I am not so attached to things, although a few things I am possessive about. 🙂

It’s not even 15 days since the year began and I have to remind myself that I have to be detached …. I also hope I can keep this ‘resolution’ as it were . (I had missed out a lot during the last month when I was in vacationing in India.) You started working on your new year goals before 2020 began, that’s awesome. My 2020 will start only in February.
